Guterres calls for restraint after Iran scientist killing

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres (pictured) on Friday urged restraint after the assassination of the Iranian scientist thought to be the head of the country's nuclear program.

"We have noted the reports that an Iranian nuclear scientist has been assassinated near Tehran today. We urge restraint and the need to avoid any actions that could lead to an escalation of tensions in the region," a spokesman for the secretary-general said.

Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Javad Zarif claimed that Isreal was behind the killing, while one of the military advisers to the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that Tehran will respond to the murder.
