HK security law foresees life in prison for collusion

Anyone who colludes in Hong Kong with foreign or external forces can be sentenced to life in prison if their crimes are "serious enough," according to the Hong Kong National Security law, which officially came into force in the Chinese autonomous region on Tuesday. If crimes of collusion are less severe, a person could face between 3 and 10 years in prison. The legislation also foresees highly-controversial extradition to China.

Additionally, for terrorism-related activities, individuals face up to 10 years of imprisonment. Furthermore, cases regarding national security will only be handled by judges known not to have acted in a way that "endangers national security."

A central government office will handle all violations of the law for safeguarding national security in Hong Kong, and it will be in charge of any cases involving foreign interference, threats to national security, and instances in which the local authorities cannot implement laws effectively.
