Hong Kong extradition bill formally withdrawn

The Hong Kong government formally pulled on Wednesday the extradition bill that sparked the five-months long protest in the financial hub. Withdrawal of the bill, which would have allowed criminal detainees to be sent from Hong Kong to Mainland China for trial or imprisonment, was one of the five main demands protesters made to the government.

In June, the legislation was suspended due to "division in society" it created and Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said in September she intended to withdraw the bill.

On Tuesday, reports said that Beijing is considering replacing Lam due to unsettling protests on the streets of Hong Kong.
