House panel votes against limiting Trump's power under Insurrection Act

The House Armed Services Committee voted against an amendment that would limit US President Donald Trump's authority under the 1807 Insurrection Act, which he threatened to invoke to deal with demonstrations in the country.

Introduced by Representative Veronica Escobar, the rule would demand Trump declares to Congress that a state doesn't want to or cannot stop an unlawful obstruction before invoking the old law. The amendment received a 25-31 vote, with several Democrats voting against the proposal.

During the demonstrations that spread across the country with regards to racial minority issues, the US president warned he is prepared to invoke the act in order to mobilize the national guard to deal with the violent behaviour occurring during protests.
