Italy suspends J&J vaccine rollout

Italy suspended the distribution of around 184,000 Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines after the potential health risk warnings from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the country's authorities stated on Wednesday.

The office of Italy's COVID-19 special commissioner said that the first shipment of J&J jabs from the US reached the country on Tuesday. However, the authorities will not be distributing the vaccine to regional centers for the time being. The announcement comes after the country's Health Minister Roberto Speranza stressed that the use of the J&J jab is vital for the sake of the mass vaccination program.

The FDA announced the call for an immediate pause of the J&J jab use on Tuesday due to six recipients developing blood clots. Potential links between blood clots and the vaccine are currently under investigation by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
