Italy's Mattarella gives Conte mandate to form new govt

Italian President Sergio Mattarella has given former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte approval to form a new government.

The country's press secretary said on Thursday that Conte accepted Mattarella's mandate without reservations to lead a coalition government composed of the center-left Democratic Party (PD) and anti-establishment Five-Star Movement (M5S). Conte is expected to be given some time to carry out political consultations to secure a working majority in parliament.

The news comes after the two sides reached an agreement on the formation of a new government on Wednesday. Conte was prime minister before resigning last week amid tensions in the ruling coalition which escalated into a motion for a no-confidence vote in his government by Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.
