Macron, Michel listed on Pegasus spyware - report

The Pegasus Project, a group of investigative journalists from 17 media outlets, including Le Monde, The Guardian, the Washington Post and others, revealed on Tuesday a leaked list of contacts used by a spyware firm, the NSO Group. The list includes 14 heads of states and governments, as well as other senior officials from 34 countries.

NSO Group is an Israeli technology company that had developed spyware called Pegasus capable to remotely access smartphones. The company says its clients are state governments that use the software to fight crime and terrorism. NSO denies listed people as spying targets.

However, the Pegasus Project investigation shows that in 2019 French President Emmanuel Macron and at the time, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel were selected as contacts of interest by the Moroccan government. "If this is proven, it is clearly very serious. All light will be shed on these media revelations," said an Elysee Palace official.
