May embarks on European tour to salvage Brexit deal

British PM Theresa May commenced a whirlwind tour of European capitals on Tuesday in a bid to garner support for her Brexit deal. Parliamentary voting on the deal, which was scheduled to be carried out on Monday, was delayed amid fears that it would be overwhelmingly rejected.

May visited The Hague for talks with Dutch PM Mark Rutte before continuing to Berlin to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel. She will then see EU Council President Donald Tusk and EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels later on Tuesday.

May’s focus will primarily be on the unpopular Irish backstop measure which was widely rejected, including by her own party’s members. The measure is a contingency option that would take effect in the event that the EU and UK do not have a free trade agreement in place by 2020.
