Merkel: EU needs to improve after Brexit

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in an interview with the Financial Times that Europe has to take on more responsibilities following Brexit.

She claimed the European Union has to respond to the United Kingdom's departure from the bloc by increasing creativity, becoming more innovative and overall a "good place for research and education," referring to Brexit as a "wake-up call."

Earlier in January, British Prime Minister Boris Jonson noted the country will not accept any extension of the Brexit transition period beyond the end of the year, as the UK is set to leave the bloc in December.
