Merkel's CDU against banning Huawei from 5G network - report

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is set to support a proposal that would not automatically exclude Huawei from the construction of the country's 5G network, media reported on Tuesday.

"State actors with sufficient resources can infiltrate the network of any equipment maker," the strategy paper backed by leading CDU lawmakers says as cited by Reuters. "Equipment makers can only be trusted if they verifiably fulfill a clearly defined security catalogue that rules out any influence from a foreign state on our 5G infrastructure," the document points out and suggests using equipment from more than one company to avoid "monoculture." The paper also points out that Germany plans to use "strong cryptography and end-to-end encryption" to secure the exchange of data.

Merkel and her government have insisted that Huawei should not be banned from Germany's 5G networks despite calls from the United States to block the Chinese company. Meanwhile, German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) President Bruno Kahl, as well as a number of German lawmakers voiced opposition to allowing Huawei access to the country's 5G infrastructure.
