NATO to up high readiness forces to over 300,000

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday that the alliance will increase the number of its high readiness forces to "well over 300,000" at the summit in Madrid on June 28-30. He said NATO will also address the issues and potential threats related to China for the first time, as well as designate Russia as "the most significant and direct threat" to its security.

The member states will also discuss support for Ukraine, which will involve a new package containing communication equipment, anti-drone systems and fuel, as well as more long-term plans to replace Ukraine's Soviet-era equipment with modern NATO equivalents. On Russia, Stoltenberg said "meaningful dialogue is not on the table simply because of Russia's behavior" but asserted that there is a need to have lines of communication and "at some stage to engage in some sort of arms control effort."
