EU construction activity falls in December

The production in the construction sector in December fell by 0.6% in the euro area (EA19) and by 0.1% in the entire European Union (EU28), according to data published by the Eurostat on Wednesday.

The statistical office of the European Union (EU) compared these seasonally adjusted data to the ones from November 2015, when production in construction grew by 0.9% in the euro area and by 0.7% in the EU28 area.

The fall in production in AE19 region was led by a decrease in civil engineering by 0.7% and building construction by 0.4%. On the wider EU scale, the building construction activity was 0.1% lower, but there were 2.6% more works in civil engineering.

The construction sector was badly hurt in Slovenia, with a huge fall of 12.5%, while France (-1.6%) and the Netherlands (-0.9%) followed in the distance. In Romania, however, it felt like the building season is in full swing, with a monthly rise of 5.8%, and Slovakia and Sweden followed by 4.3% and 2.6% respective rises.

The annual production in construction fell 0.4% in the EA19 region, while it grew by 1.4% in the wider EU28 region.
