Spain: Retail sales 4.1% higher YoY; mortgages rise by 4.1%

Retail sales index in Spain rose 0.6% in April compared to 0.5% in March. The sales grew by 4.1% compared to the same month a year ago (4.4% in March) according to data provided by the Instituto Nacional de Estadíca (INE) on Friday.

Looking into trends in April, the general retail index (ICM), excluding services, grew at a monthly rate of 0.8%. Energy sales were 1.4% higher, and in the other sectors by 0.8%. If broken down by type of product, personal equipment sales rose by 1.6%.

Large chains added 2.4% and supermarkets grew by 1.2%, but small chains saw 0.8% lower sales.

The ICM rose 4.1% compared to the same month a year ago. Taking out currency pressure, sales were 6.4% higher, a rise of 2.2 points.

In a separate set of data, INE said there were 22,983 new home mortgages in March, a rise of 14.5% compared to the same month a year ago. Average loans amount increased by 4.8% to stand at €107,861.
