Apple secures permit to test driverless cars in California

Apple Inc. has received a permit to conduct tests of self-driving cars in California, the state Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed on Friday.

The iPhone maker's name appeared on a list of other companies competing in the autonomous vehicle market that managed to secure the permit in California. These include Alphabet, Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Tesla Motors, Nissan, BMW, Honda and others, all vying to be the first to bring driverless cars to the masses.

The Cupertino-based company has been working on building a self-driving vehicle – an effort it code-named Project Titan – for several years, but has been quite secretive about it. However, recent reports suggested that Apple is now shifting its focus towards developing self-driving software it can deploy in partnership with existing carmakers.
