Conte fails to form govt as president rejects economy minister bid

Candidate for the Prime Minister of Italy, Giuseppe Conte, failed to form the country's government after the President Sergio Mattarella rejected his candidate for head of the economy ministry, the president's office announced on Sunday.

The next step for the country could be to hold another nation-wide parliamentary election, as the leader of the far-right League of North leader Matteo Salvini said: "In a democracy, if we are still in democracy, there’s only one thing to do, let the Italians have their say."

Mattarella, who is pro-European, rejected Conte's eurosceptic pick to lead Italy's economic policy, Paolo Savona. Conte stated that he "gave the maximum effort, attention" to form the government, before returning the mandate.
