US, Russian armed forces chiefs to meet in Helsinki

The Finnish Defence Forces said on Thursday that they have arranged for the top military leadership of the United States and Russia to meet in Helsinki. The delegation from Washington is headed by General Joseph Dunford Jr. (pictured), chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the counterparts from the Kremlin will be led by General of the Army Valery Gerasimov, chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, the announcement added and revealed the event is scheduled for tomorrow.

Earlier media reports indicated the White House is preparing the ground for a possible summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The two leaders would discuss the situation in Ukraine and cover the issue of nuclear proliferation, while the military top brass would in advance negotiate about deescalation in Syria, according to the alleged plans.

The meeting on June 8 will take place on the initiative of both governments, said Finnish Defense Forces. The two commanding officers will also sit down with Sauli Niinisto, president of Finland, and General Jarmo Lindberg, the Nordic country's chief of defense, while its military is not participating in the bilateral meeting, according to the statement.
