Canada is optimistic about NAFTA talks, Freeland says

Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland told reporters her government based its position on understandings reached earlier in the year with the United States and Mexico, and repeated it is encouraged by the progress between its two partners in the North American Free Trade Agreement. Speaking briefly on Wednesday before meeting Robert Lighthizer, she expressed optimism there would be "good, productive conversations."

The top diplomat noted her team met with Mexico's representatives last night. She said the country's "significant concessions" would be "really good for Canadian workers."

The US made it clear it could move forward with a bilateral deal with its southern neighbor if the administration in Ottawa doesn't get on board by the end of the week in talks about the overhaul of NAFTA.
