Europe closes mixed with Brexit, trade in focus

European markets closed mixed on Wednesday as investors monitor developments in trade and Brexit. Earlier, talk of delaying the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union intensified as an unnamed minister suggested Brexit would be postponed even in the event parliament accepts Prime Minister Theresa May's withdrawal agreement.

News on the trade deal between China and the United States are still awaited. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said earlier this week the two were "on the cusp" of reaching a deal, while Chinese Commerce Minister Zhong Shan stated that the talks with Washington are difficult. Meanwhile, the US trade deficit jumped to its highest in more than a decade.

The DAX closed 0.25% in the red as Fresenius Medical Care dipped 2.04%. The CAC 40 lost 0.16% with STMicroelectronics leading the decliners as it dropped 3.58%. The FTSE 100 gained 0.17%; British American Tobacco jumped 4.40%. The euro rose 0.05% against the dollar at 5:41 pm CET, buying 1.13138.
