Facebook outages caused by BGP leak - experts

Facebook app outages that some users in Europe and North America are still experiencing are caused by a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) leak, according to network management firm Netscout.

The BGP routes traffic between networks that make the Internet and, although it is not malicious, it can cause widespread problems as it is insecure and can inconveniently redirect portions of the internet, Axios reported and added that Google had a BGP issue last year that made its search and other services briefly unavailable to many users.

Facebook shares traded 1.30% lower in after-hours trading, following reports of persistent problems with its apps.
