UK MPs vote to take control of Brexit process

The British House of Commons accepted on Monday the Letwin amendment by 329 votes to 302. The amendment gives the parliament more power as the MPs will take over the agenda and indicative votes on Brexit. The government instructed Tory MPs to vote against the amendment, prompting three ministers to resign in order to support it, the Guardian reported. A total of 30 Conservative MPs voted in favor of the amendment, while eight Labour lawmakers voted against it.

The government issued a statement, saying the amendment "upends the balance between our democratic institutions and sets a dangerous, unpredictable precedent for the future." It vowed to continue to "call for realism" in further negotiations with the European Union, and warned Parliament that any prolonged talks would mean the UK will have to hold the EU parliamentary elections.

Meanwhile, the parliament rejected the Beckett amendment by 314 votes to 311. It would have forced a vote in Parliament on a no-deal Brexit if "the UK comes within seven calendar days of leaving the European Union without a deal."
