Bouteflika resigns, promises peaceful transition

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned following weeks of protests calling for an end of his 20-year rule.

So far it is not clear who will succeed 82-year-old Bouteflika who was, until recently, planning to seek a fifth term in office. His plans led to a wave of anti-government protests as Bouteflika suffered a stroke in 2013 and has de facto left the running of the country to a group of senior officials and relatives.

In a message to the head of the country's Constitutional Council following his resignation, Bouteflika said that he has taken "all measures to ensure continuity in the country for the normal functioning of its institutions during the transition period, which should lead to the election of a new president of the republic,” state-run APS news agency reported.
