ExxonMobil evacuates staff from Iraq oil field - report

ExxonMobil Corp. started evacuation of its staff from the West Qurna oil field in southern Iraq, in the province of Basra, not far from the border with Iran, local media reported citing sources in the Iraqi oil ministry.

According to the report, the decision was made based on "information relating to the risks to the safety of workers in oil fields."

Earlier in the day, the Department of State of the United States ordered the departure of non-emergency government employees from Iraq, arousing concerns about a possible standoff with Iran. The US Central Command raised the threat level to its service members in Iraq and Syria to "high," while the Netherlands and Germany suspended their military missions in Iraq, due to "indications" of potential security risks.
