Ford confirms start of talks to close Bridgend engine plant

Ford Motor Company confirmed on Thursday that it has initiated consultations about the possible closure of its south Wales engine plant in Bridgend, which manufactures engines that are used in the carmaker's production facilities across Europe.

The site has been struggling after Ford's decision to cut down on planned investment into the facility three years ago, as well as the loss of Jaguar Land Rover's contract, for which the plant produced larger engines.

Earlier, plans to shut production leaked to the media, prompting union leaders to call on the governments in London and Cardiff to help prevent the closure.
