US to discuss adding to Middle East forces - report

United States President Donald Trump's national security team should meet to consider increasing its military presence in the Middle East, CNN reported. According to two US officials with direct knowledge of the discussions, the focal point of the meeting will be "deterrence and defense against Iranian aggression." They did not specify when it will take place and when the president will be briefed on it.

The already tense relations with Iran took a turn for the worse last week when the US accused Tehran of attacking two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman. Iran has rejected the accusations. The unnamed officials told CNN the national security team will be considering sending ground combat forces, as well as Patriot missile batteries, fighter jets and ships, as Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan stated Washington needs to "make contingency plans."
