EU reaches out to Johnson to avoid hard Brexit - report

The European Union has held secret meetings with Boris Johnson (pictured), who is likely to become the next prime minister of the United Kingdom, in order to avoid a hard Brexit, the Sunday Times reported.

Senior Irish politicians and diplomats have reportedly held talks with two allies of Johnson's cabinet in the past few days. Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium have also reached out to Johnson "and signaled an intention to do a deal," the news organization wrote.

The new European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently expressed hope that a deal will be reached with London, warning of "massively negative consequences" if a disorderly withdrawal is not avoided.
