Zarif: Iran against war, but won't blink to defend territory

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in an interview with CNN released on Thursday that his country does not want a war with the United States and Saudi Arabia but warned it "won't blink to defend" its territory if Washington or Riyadh strike first. He added the result of any intervention against Iran will be an "all-out war."

"We don't want war. We don't want to engage in a military confrontation. We believe that a military confrontation based on deception is awful, will have a lot of casualties," Zarif stated. "But we won't blink to defend our territory," he warned and added that Iran "never started a war." According to the Iranian top diplomat, his country has no interest in beginning a war as it is "content" with its current status and believes the tensions in the Middle East should be resolved through dialogue.

Earlier, the US and Saudi Arabia accused Tehran of carrying out attacks on Saudi oil facilities with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo describing the strikes as an "act of war." US President Donald Trump claimed he would like to avoid a military conflict but refused to entirely rule it out, stressing the US could start an intervention against Iran "in an instant" if necessary.
