Mulvaney claims media twisted his Ukraine remarks

"There was absolutely no quid pro quo between Ukrainian military aid and any investigation into the 2016 election," Director of the Office of Management and Budget and Acting White House Chief of Staff Nick Mulvaney wrote in a statement, walking back on what he earlier told reporters and accusing them of supporting the campaign against President Donald Trump. The United States held off on wiring funds to Ukraine because other countries were not offering support and because of general corruption concerns, he clarified.

The official has revealed at a previous press conference that the suspension of aid was related to suspicion that Ukraine could retrieve a breached server with data from the Democratic National Committee. "Once again, the media has decided to misconstrue my comments to advance a biased and political witch hunt," he asserted in his reaction.

Mulvaney has initially reacted to a question about quid pro quo in the relations with the Eastern European state by saying: "We do that all the time with foreign policy."
