US wants to expand arms control beyond New START

While the United States may renew the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), it wants to expand arms control to other countries, as well as other weapons, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale (pictured) stated on Tuesday.

"We have not ruled out an extension of New START, but our priority is to promote arms control that goes beyond the confines of a narrow, bilateral approach by incorporating other countries, including China, and a broader range of weapons, including non-strategic nuclear weapons," Hale asserted.

Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Moscow offered a five-year prolongation of the New START to the US.
