Europe starts higher on a wave of earnings reports

European markets opened on Thursday with gains after a string of companies posted earnings results for the last quarter and the whole of 2019, including UniCredit, ING, Sanofi, Equinor, Total and ArcelorMittal. In data, factory orders in Germany fell in December, according to Destatis.

Fears over coronavirus outbreak were subdued after progress was reported yesterday on finding a cure.

The DAX increased 0.79% at the opening bell, with Deutsche Bank and Continental as leading performers, as the FTSE 100 climbed 0.59%, pulled by NMC Health. The CAC 40 jumped 1.02%. ArcelorMittal outperformed others surging 10.75% at 9:13 am CET on upbeat financial results.

The euro added 0.10% on the dollar at 9:05 am CET, going for $1.1008, while the pound traded flat against the US currency, changing hands for $1.2985.
