Abbott's rapid test may be returning false negatives - FDA

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned the public on Thursday about Abbott Laboratories' point-of-care COVID-19 test possibly suggesting inaccurate results.

"We are still evaluating the information about inaccurate results and are in direct communications with Abbott about this important issue," Director of the Office of In Vitro Diagnostics and Radiological Health in the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Tim Stenzel, said.

Early data suggests the test might be returning false negatives, Stenzel noted, adding it can still be used to correctly identify many positive cases very quickly. However, it may be necessary to check the negative results with a high-sensitivity authorized molecular test.
