China passes Hong Kong national security law - report

Standing Committee of China's top legislative body, the National People's Congress (NPC), unanimously passed Hong Kong national security law on Tuesday, several local media organizations reported.

Put together by Beijing, the draft of the bill was submitted to the NPC earlier in June and is aimed at "effectively preventing" and mitigating the actions that "seriously" harm China's national security, according to Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam. Having been passed, the bill is expected to come to effect starting July 1.

The legislation, which would allow China to override the local government, has received criticism in the past, with many nations worried as it is believed the law would negatively affect the city's autonomy. Lam claimed, however, the special administrative region's governing principle will not be undermined by the bill.
