Trump won't sign virus relief bill without payroll tax cut

United States President Donald Trump is insisting the next coronavirus stimulus package includes a payroll tax cut, sources told Politico, while the White House confirmed the president is adamant on the issue.

According to the Politico report, Vice President Mike Pence told House Republicans this week that they should be pushing for the tax cut as part of any relief bill, while White House spokesman Judd Deere said Trump has "called on Congress to pass this before and he believes it must be part of any phase four package."

"As he has done since the beginning of this pandemic, President Trump wants to provide relief to hardworking Americans who have been impacted by this virus and one way of doing that is with a payroll tax holiday," Deere added. The Senate is expected to start debating the virus relief bill next week.
