Fauci 'cautiously optimistic' on COVID-19 vaccine

Dr. Anthony Fauci (pictured), director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, stated on Friday the early data shows that a coronavirus vaccine could become available by end of 2020.

"There's never a guarantee that you're going to get a safe and effective vaccine, but from everything we've seen now in the animal data, as well as the early human data, we feel cautiously optimistic that we will have a vaccine by the end of this year and as we go into 2021," Fauci said during his testimony in front of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Response.

Earlier today, the Trump administration announced it reached an agreement with Sanofi S.A. and GlaxoSmithKline plc to provide the two pharmaceutical companies with $2.1 billion to speed up the COVID-19 vaccine development and manufacturing.
