Report: Uber, Lyft consider different model in California

Ride-hailing companies Uber and Lyft are considering a franchise-like model for their businesses in California following a court ruling that would require the pair to classify their drivers as employees, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.

According to multiple sources familiar with the talks, the companies could license their brands to operators of vehicle fleets in the state, creating a sort of franchise model and maintaining the drivers' non-employee status.

Earlier this month, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the company might be forced to temporarily shut down its app in California.
