Bitcoin tops $15,500 as banks discuss digital currency

The price of Bitcoin crossed $15,500 on Friday as central banks across the globe continued discussions on introducing digital currencies, citing the coronavirus crisis as the factor that will speed up the e-commerce expansion.

The United States Justice Department previously announced it seized over $1 billion in Bitcoin tied to the now-defunct Silk Road dark web market. Meanwhile, investors are focused on the presidential race in the United States, which is in its final phase.

Bitcoin gained 2.77% over the last 24 hours to sell for $15,570.76 at 12:11 pm ET, while Ether concurrently surged 6.65% to $445.14. With the extension of the pandemic, Bitcoin reached its highest value since 2018.
