Russia: Polar explorers unaffected by earthquake

The Russian embassy in Chile stated that its research station in the South Shetland Islands, as well as its staffers, were not affected by the earthquake that hit the region earlier.

No data has been received on the potential evacuation of the Russian explorers, the diplomatic mission added in its statement to Tass.

The earthquake which hit the Antarctic region had a magnitude of 7.0 and has reportedly prompted approximately 160 international researchers to leave the area. The Antarctic has no clear territorial jurisdiction and hosts research stations from 10 different countries.
