Europe opens lower on vaccine delay concerns

European markets opened with losses on Thursday amid concerns over delays in the delivery of coronavirus vaccines. European Union officials are demanding AstraZeneca fulfills its contractual commitments to deliver its COVID-19 vaccine after the pharmaceutical company said production issues will leave the bloc with 75 million fewer doses than expected.

Meanwhile, the retail investor frenzy continued to fuel unusual activity in markets, spreading to Europe as well and leading to major price swings among heavily shorted stocks.

The DAX was down 0.91% in the first minute of trading as Delivery Hero led the losses with a 3% drop. The CAC 40 fell 0.75% in Paris with Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield plunging nearly 7%. The FTSE 100 opened 0.86% in the red; mining companies were the weakest performers.
