Johnson: Govt action on Super League possible

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told on Tuesday the English Football Association (FA), Premier League (EPL), and association football fan groups that "no action is off the table" concerning the European Super League, including "legislative options, to ensure these proposals are stopped."

"The PM [Prime Minister] confirmed the government will not stand by while a small handful of owners create a closed shop," Johnson's spokesperson said. "He reiterated his unwavering support for the football authorities and confirmed they have the government's full backing to take whatever action necessary to put a stop to these plans."

Earlier this week, the European Super League Company, S.L. announced it is launching its own competition that will feature 12 elite clubs from the continent, including six from England. The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) criticized the move, with the latter threatening to ban players participating in the Super League from the World Cup and the European Championship.
