53 Palestinians injured in clashes with Israeli police

In the latest clashes with Israeli police on Friday night, at least 53 Palestinians were reported to be injured, 23 of which have been hospitalized. The tensions with the police started as Muslims gathered for their last Friday of Ramadan month in Jerusalem.

The police allegedly used rubber bullets and stun grenades on the Palestinian worshippers, including women and children, close to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem's Old City. With health restrictions mostly lifted in Israel, tens of thousands of Muslims joined for prayer, despite Israeli forces setting roadblocks and limiting access.

Additionally, the clashes were provoked by Palestinians protesting against the eviction of residents in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, mostly inhabited by Arabs, but also containing a site revered by religious Jews as the tomb of an ancient high priest, Simeon the Just.
