Suga endorses Kono for LDP leader

Outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga expressed his support on Friday for the country's coronavirus vaccine minister Taro Kono (pictured) to succeed him as the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

Speaking to reporters, Suga stated that he supports Kono in the presidential election, as it is important to continue with the fight against the pandemic and Kono has reportedly been quite popular as the vaccination minister so far.

Kono has emerged as the top pick for Suga's successor amongst the voters as well, with polls indicating he is enjoying 23% to 35% of public support. Elections for the LDP president will most likely be held on September 29, as Japan is expected to pick a new Prime Minister on October 4.
