US extends national emergency beyond March 1

United States President Joe Biden declared on Friday that the national emergency in the country, which was announced in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be extended beyond March 1 due to the continued public health risk caused by the coronavirus.

In a letter published by the White House and sent to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and President of the Senate, the president mentions that "the COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause significant risk to the public health and safety of the Nation."

Biden noted that the deaths of more than 900,000 Americans from COVID-19 underscored the necessity of responding to the pandemic with "the full capability" of the federal government.
