US not looking at another trade deal with China - Tai

United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai (pictured) said on Thursday that Washington and Beijing "need to move to a new phase of our engagement" but that another trade deal will not be "necessarily" pursued by the Biden administration in the potential next stage.

The US is "not going to close the door" to discussions with the People's Republic about China's compliance with its commitments under the phase one trade deal reached in early 2020, Tai told US senators during the second day of her congressional testimony on the administration's trade policies.

The next stage of the bilateral trade relationship should put more emphasis on "issues that were not captured by phase one or the original investigation on intellectual property and forced technology transfer," such as China's moves to corner the market in "critical" and "future" industries, the American official underlined.
