Von der Leyen: Ukraine must win this war

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remarked at the 2022 World Economic Forum (WEF) on Tuesday that, while speaking about Russia's military intervention in Ukraine, Kiev "must win this war" and that Moscow's "aggression" must end in "strategic failure."

Commenting on the conflict, von der Leyen stated that, "for the first time in history," the European Union is helping a third country that is "under attack." She stressed that, since the start of Russia's operation, the bloc has received six million Ukrainian refugees. The president also highlighted the importance of sanctions the EU has imposed on Russia in pressuring Moscow to halt its operation. She added that Moscow's attempt to cut off its supply of gas to the EU has only strengthened the bloc's determination to "get rid of" Russia's energy imports.

"But this is not only about undoing the damage of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin's destructive fury. It is also about building the future the Ukrainians have chosen themselves. [...] The reconstruction of the country should combine massive investment with ambitious reforms," von der Leyen noted. "We will hand in hand help Ukraine rise from the ashes. That's the idea behind the reconstruction platform that I proposed to [Ukrainian] President [Volodymyr] Zelensky. [...] The rebuilding of Ukraine calls for unprecedented unity."
