EU to jointly buy antivirals, vaccines against monkeypox

The European Union has reached an agreement to buy vaccines and drugs used against monkeypox to counter a potential outbreak, according to a report published by Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter on Friday.

The report cited Sweden's vaccine coordinator Richard Bergstrom as saying the bloc would jointly acquire vaccines developed by German biotech company Bavarian Nordic and American pharma firm Siga Technologies. However, Bergstrom said that Brussels hasn't signed official contracts yet.

"But it will go quickly. We should have a contract ready in a week or so and maybe some limited deliveries in June," he noted, adding that the EU plans to also get antiviral drugs used against monkeypox, the virus which has been detected in around 200 people across 19 countries worldwide during May.
