US allows Russian port tanker to unload cargo - report

The United States allowed a tanker that departed from a port in Russia's Black Sea Taman peninsula to unload its cargo in New Orleans, having confirmed that no sanctions were breached in the process, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

It was verified that the Daytona tanker was chartered by the Dutch trading company Vitol, and that the cargo aboard originated in Kazakhstan, not Russia, and that it was, therefore, not subject to established US oil and gas sanctions against Moscow.

On Tuesday, American authorities stopped the Daytona tanker on its way to ship oil to New Orleans, subjecting it to extensive checks by the US Customs and Border Protection.
