Musk: Badge fee needed as Twitter can't rely only on advertisers
New Twitter CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday that the company has to charge subscription fees for the verification badges in order to "pay the bills" and cannot have advertising as its sole source of income, but seemed open to cutting the subscription fee from the originally reported $19.99.
"We need to pay the bills somehow! Twitter cannot rely entirely on advertisers. How about $8?" Musk tweeted.
The comments were made in response to author Stephen King's tweet in which he criticized Twitter for plans to charge $20 a month to those who want to get or retain their badge.
