Nissan to cut 700 contract workers at Mississippi plant

Nissan Motor stated on Thursday it will be cutting up to 700 contract workers at its Mississippi plant, which employs 6,400 individuals, stating slow sales as the main reason for the move.

In December, the Japanese carmaker announced it would be cutting 1,000 jobs at two Mexican plants. Although the restructuring comes in wake of the arrest of former chairman Carlos Ghosn, spokeswoman Lloryn Love-Carter stated that the cuts are not related to developments relating to the Ghosn situation.

Ghosn, who has been in custody since November on charges of aggravated breach of trust and underreporting his income at the Japanese carmaker, was denied his bail request earlier this week.
