No valid reason for HK election postponement - Pompeo

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed there is no valid reason for "such a lengthy delay" of the Legislative Council elections in Hong Kong, urging the special autonomous region's leadership to reconsider the decision.

"This regrettable action confirms that Beijing has no intention of upholding the commitments it made to the Hong Kong people and the United Kingdom under the Sino-British Joint Declaration, a UN-registered treaty, and the Basic Law," Pompeo said in a statement, adding "Hong Kong will continue its march toward becoming just another Communist-run city in China" if Beijing postpones the election.

On Friday, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam invoked emergency powers to postpone the vote by a year over pandemic fears, noting the city "needs to be on high alert all the time." The White House condemned the delay, accusing the local authorities of aiming to "disqualify opposition candidates" and "undermine the democratic process."
