Nokia, Nestle join climate coalition led by UN

Ahead of the start of the Climate Action Summit in New York, the United Nations Global Compact, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the We Mean Business group said the number of companies joining their call for action has more than tripled to 87 since July. The statement released on Sunday revealed Nokia Oyj, Nestle SA, Intuit Inc., Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson, Salesforce.com Inc. and Deutsche Telekom AG are among the entities that joined the initiative.

They committed to adjusting operations and value chains to limit the global advance in temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Nestle is part of a smaller circle, which targets zero emissions by 2050. The event is hosted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

"It is encouraging to see many first movers in the private sector align with civil society and ambitious governments by stepping up in support of a 1.5°C future," he said and called for "a clear signal that markets are shifting." Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Levi Strauss and Unilever were among the initial signatories.
