Pompeo urges Europe to exercise 'economic pressure' on Iran

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on its European allies to step up the "economic pressure" on Iran in an effort to prevent the country from allegedly funding terrorist activities.

"We ask our allies & partners to join our economic pressure campaign against Iran's regime. We must cut off all funding the regime uses to fund terrorism & proxy wars. There’s no telling when Iran may try to foment terrorism, violence & instability in one of our countries next," Pompeo tweeted ahead of his talks with European officials amid the NATO summit in Brussels. Pompeo claimed that the US and its allies have an "obligation" to stop Iran's attempts to "start trouble wherever it can."

Earlier, Washington urged all countries to completely stop buying oil from Iran by November and threatened those who don't with sanctions. However, Pompeo noted the US may consider demands from "a handful of countries" for waivers from the sanctions against Iran. Meanwhile, Iran claimed the US top diplomat was making "groundless accusations" against Tehran.
